The Batman comics just two years prior to TV show were different from the corny aliens stories of the 1950s. Editor Julius Schwartz had the writers abandon all that silliness and bring more realism and mystery into the stories. The TV series was behind the times if it tried to adapt the 50s silliness and wasn't a true reflection of the Batman comics of that time. Although the first season was fairly close.
